Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Just about every one of us has heard about the healthful benefits of adding fish oil to your diet. Fish oil contains omega-3 fatty acids, which has been linked to positive effects in the human body. These benefits include lower blood pressure, lower triglycerides and overall cholesterol levels, and even the possibility of reducing the effects of certain types of cancers. The cancers in question include colon, breast, and prostate cancer.

Omega 3 fatty acids have been included in a multitude of medical studies as being very helpful in lowering the risk of heart disease. However, it only includes those individuals that have taken significant amounts of omega-3 over a long period of time. So, what quantity of omega-3 fatty acids are needed to provide an individual with exceptional results?

Perhaps there is no exact answer, however, we need to take a look at some variables before deciding on how much you need to ingest into your diet for them to become effective.

First of all, there's the age factor. According to experts, "younger people need a higher dose of fish oil than older people." Why? More than likely, it's due to the fact that younger people have higher metabolisms and are more active. The fact that they are more active, leads to their bodies burning higher amounts of calories and fats. On the other hand, older people are typically less active, in turn, they don't need quite as much fish oil to achieve the same benefits.

The second factor that plays a role in deciding on how much omega-3 fatty acids you need is the source, or quality, in which you are taking. Fish oil from its true source, like mackerel, lake trout, herring, sardines, albacore tuna, and salmon, may not be as effective as, say, a supplement. And if your source of the natural fish is not reliable, it may even cause more harm than good, especially if it's contaminated with mercury. The source and quality of omega-3 fatty acids is very important.

Fish oil is readily available in capsule and liquid form, but then again, not all are created equal. It's been scientifically proven that the quality and concentration of fish oil over the counter can vary greatly. When choosing a quality fish oil supplement, one should make sure that it's at least health food store grade, and preferably pharmaceutical grade. The higher the quality, the less you should have to ingest to experience the real health benefits.

Your medical condition is the final factor to consider when deciding what dosage of fish oil you need. For example, if you have high cholesterol, are a high risk of heart disease or have high blood pressure, your doctor may prescribe a higher than normal dose for you. Remember, it's up to your doctor to decide. As with any supplement, you should consult your physician, or medical professional first. It's not advised to self prescribe more than is recommended on the label of any over-the-counter supplement.

So, what's the general rule of thumb? The American Heart Association recommends consuming 1–3 grams per day of EPA and DHA. For certain medical conditions, however, higher doses of omega-3 products, up to 4 grams per day, can be used safely, and with good effect. Included the right amount of omega 3 fatty acids can be one of the smartest and most healthy things you ever do for yourself and your body.

TriVita's Omega Prime helps meet the American Heart Association (AHA) guidelines for omega-3 fatty acids. One daily dose of Omega Prime provides the amount of Omega-3 recommended by the AHA for healthy individuals, as well as for those who have heart disease or the risk of it.

weight loss

Most of the Developed and developing world are experiencing a drastic weight increase where about 50% of the population are overweight. I know that statistic is very shocking, but if you want to stay healthy, and protect yourself from any sudden illness you can introduce this quick weight loss tip into your life:

Eliminate The Carbs

A quick method to lose weight fast is to eliminate all carbohydrates from your diets. You see what happens is when you are only eating fats without carbs, your body is forced to use the fats as fuel.

When you exercise you will decrease the time it takes you to lose weight. When you put the two combined, consuming fats and exercising, your body will undergo the phenomenon of “ketosis”. When you enter into this state your body will shed off fat at a much faster rate, although you do want to break this up every now and then with a “carb up” day on day 7. This carb up day stops your body from thinking it’s starving and instead keeping the fat that you are trying to shed, which is very important/

I encourage you to jog often or use the treadmill as this will really create a ripple effect and speed up the process, alternatively using a rowing machine. So hopefully you put these quick weight loss tip into practice, they both work amazing side by side.

An Important Link Between Brain Health and B-12

I recently read an article in TriVita's Vita Journal titled" Can a Supplement ease Alzheimer's?" written by Dr. Scott Conrad Founder of Tiena Health. This article was of great importance to me as my mother was recently afflicted with this horrible disease as a result of a stroke. In Dr. Conrad's article he wrote about the millions that have been affected in some way shape or form by this disease called Alzheimer. Caregivers, friends and family know how atrocious it is to watch someone with Alzheimer slowly their lose memory, the increased confusion, along with the erosion of the mind and body. It is the most heartbreaking pill in life to swallow. To be honest I do not know if I will ever learn to accept what has happened to my mother.

Yet, in all this sadness, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Brain health and B-12 according to a recent 2008 study from the University of Oxford, England suggests a possible link between low levels of B-12 and the higher probability in decreased brain volume or better known as "brain erosion". The same study also suggested that those with a higher level of B-12 had a decreased probability in brain erosion. Since one of the results of Alzheimer is brain erosion this study has promising importance.

This study concluded:"People with lower levels of B-12 were six times more likely to have brain volume loss "brain erosion" than those with higher levels of B-12." These findings are quite conclusive.

It is these very findings that spurred further research into the great benefits of B-12, that in fact B-12 may protect against the devastating disease Alzheimer. As researchers found that the erosion is linked directly to reduced mental function. Which is obvious in Alzheimer patients.

This particular study in England took place over five years with 107 adults ages 61 to 87. The question posed "What is the link between vitamin B-12 and brain erosion?"

In order to answer this question, the researchers had the participants in the study followed guidelines according to results published by the medical journal Neurology. The participants underwent annual blood tests, MRI's, physical exams and memory tests. None of the subjects had any mental impairments when they began the study.

When the study ended all of the participants had B-12 levels in the normal range, on the other hand, the differences in brain volume between the normal low range and normal high range were quite noteworthy. Therefore once again the conclusion "People with lower levels of B-12 were six times more likely to have brain volume loss "brain erosion" than those with higher levels of B-12."

This article also pointed out the continual important as a society to take enough B-12 daily as deficiencies result in such symptoms as decreased mental and nerve functions and of course many more, too many to list. But I believe you get the jest.

Yet what I found most beneficial was the new research brought forth that brain erosion can also be a direct result of lack of B-12. To read more on this subject and to find out how you can guard against this ugly new truth called brain erosion visit http://vitamin-b12-supplements.blogspot.com

Vitamin B12

"Dr. Alfred Libby was a medical doctor and substance abuse therapy specialist who worked primarily with heroin addicts – searching for new therapies to improve the detoxification process. He was aware that most addicts were not getting the B-12 they needed through food, but he was extremely reluctant to give them any kind of injection. In the late 1970s, Dr. Libby began to explore an alternative delivery system for vitamin B-12. The goal was to bypass the stomach where this essential nutrient is not easily absorbed."

"In early spring of 1980, Dr. Libby approached his colleagues with his theory that B-12 could be delivered to the bloodstream sublingually (under the tongue). Biochemists and his medical colleagues were quick to dismiss the idea. However, he was persistent and they eventually decided to give his theory a try, although they were convinced it would fail."

"Six weeks later the first study was underway. Shortly after, Dr. Libby's sublingual delivery method was deemed a complete success – blood levels of B-12 increased dramatically. Dr. Libby significantly improved his formula with the addition of B-6 & Folic Acid and was issued a patent in 1984 for his sublingual process."

"And now, from the experts that brought you the original Sublingual B-12 comes TriVita Super Sublingual B-12. With the original, patented delivery system, TriVita Super B provides more B-12 than the average B-12 shot. Studies show that these important nutrients can be measured in the bloodstream in as little as 30 minutes! Plus, it's the first and only B-12 product to combine both major forms of B-12 with B-6, folic acid and ginseng."

"Thanks to Dr. Libby's original, patented delivery system, thousands of people have experienced increased stamina, mental clarity, improved memory and much more"!

The information listed above is from the TriVita web site (www.trivita.com/superb/getsuperb.com/dr_libby.aspx), and the reason I bring this up is because of my wife's son, who has been told that he may have to continue receiving Vitamin B-12 shots the rest of his life. He's only 25! YIKES!

Here's his short story. Eighteen months ago he was in the hospital with what was diagnosed as a bleeding ulcer. The doctors found and repaired the problem, no worries. Fast forward to the present (one month ago) - seventeen months later - his condition returned. This time it was much worse, as he was hospitalized for five days, and was given six units of blood. As the doctors continued to monitor his one month progress, they find out that his blood levels are too low (whatever that means).

That leads us to where I started his story. The doctors feel that he "may need vitamin b12 shot the rest of his life." So with that said, I suggested TriVita's patented Sublingual B12. Is it recommended by the doctors? Will it be as effective as a true vitamin b12 shot? I guess only time will tell. If "TriVita Super B provides more B-12 than the average B-12 shot" he should be fine, and should be getting enough b12 into his system to discontinue the painful shots.

Lose your Belly Fat

There us only one way to cure a fat stomach and that is to lose weight.Let me explain why proper nutrition is essential to getting rid of belly fat. First of all, proper nutrition speeds up your body's metabolism, or the processes that derive and use the energy from the foods that you consume for bodily functions such as movement. When you increase your metabolism, your body converts the organic compounds from the foods you eat into usable energy and actually uses that energy for various functions faster. This makes the energy derived from the foods available to your body when it needs it and reduces the amount of unused energy that is stored as fat in your body. Eating a healthy breakfast is one of the best and easiest ways to speed up your metabolism throughout the day.

When you don't eat eat breakfast, your metabolism slows down, meaning that your bodily functions are not carried out at as high a rate. Your body does not use up the energy that is converted from food as quickly, meaning the extra energy is stored as fat. The mark of a good breakfast is some protein and fiber, so whole grains and low fat meats, beans, and eggs are some examples of foods to include. Not only can eating a healthy breakfast help you lose weight, but you will feel better throughout the day.

Another way to reduce belly fat through a healthy diet is to stop eating junk foods. Starchy foods, foods high in sugar and simple carbohydrates, and processed foods are not only unhealthy, but they contribute to fat gain. Foods that contain complex carbohydrates, such as foods with whole grains, require your body to exert more effort to break them down and convert them into usable energy. This means that the energy derived from these foods will become available to you more gradually, preventing storage of excess calories that build up when you consume simple sugars. Also, by eating fiber, you help regulate your digestive system's activities and make energy available at a more regular pace. Of course, always eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and avoid foods high in fat. Decrease your meal portion sizes but eat more healthy snacks throughout the day. Plan ahead as to what you will eat, so you avoid mindless eating and snacking that will add up over time. By eating carefully planned smaller meals and healthy snacks throughout the day, you will better regulate your metabolism and prevent excess calories from being stored as fat. Also, go for lean meats and avoid blatantly high calorie foods.

As you can see, the key to reducing belly fat with a proper diet is really not that hard or painful. In fact, it can be very enjoyable, as it is not a real "diet". You can still eat many of the foods you enjoy
