Artificial Sweetners

Artificial sweetners

Artificial sweeteners are not a healthy substitute for sugar and they often cause people to eat more food and gain weight. When the body detects a sweet taste, it expects carbohydrates that contain nutrition, and when the gut finds no nutrition, the message is sent to the brain to eat more in order to get the nutrition needed.

The FDA has had more complaints about Aspartame (NutraSweet, Equal, Canderel, NatraSweet, Spoonfuls, DiabetiSweet) than any other food additive, and yet it is still on the GRAS list (Generally Regarded As Safe) despite its strong association with brain tumours and seizures. It is a synthetic compound made up of Phenylalanine and Aspartic Acid held in a chemical bond by Methanol, which breaks down into Formic Acid, Formaldehyde and Diketopiperazine (DKP). It is the DKP that causes brain tumours. Aspartame breaks down more quickly with heat, and as such, is worse in hot drinks, or in soda pop that may have been in the sun at some point in its journey to our fridges. If you have ever tasted a diet drink that didn’t taste sweet, you know the Aspartame in it broke down into the above mentioned neurotoxins (nerve poisons). Some symptoms of Aspartame toxicity include migraines, depression, seizures, attention deficit disorder, angry rages, joint pain, muscle spasm, and it can mimic diseases like MS, chronic fatigue syndrome, and fibromyalgia. Symptoms like migraines may appear quickly in some people, while in others there may be no symptoms for some time. If you or someone you care about has any of these symptoms, remove Aspartame from the diet for four to six weeks before medical testing to see if the symptoms resolve, and so that the artificial sweetener won’t cloud the diagnosis. Once again, read labels, because Aspartame is everywhere, including children’s vitamins, cool aid type fruit drinks, diet soda pop, sugar free chewing gum, gelatin desserts, frozen desserts, fillings and toppings for baked goods, hot chocolate mixes, breath mints, yogurt, wine coolers, tea beverages, some flavoured bottled waters, some fibre cereals, cold remedies and other medications. Mary Nash Stoddard compiled the research on Aspartame into a report that she titled Deadly Deception: Story of Aspartame : Shocking Expose of the World’s Most Controversial Sweetener, if you are interested in looking into this subject further.

Sucralose, under the brand name of Splenda, is gaining in popularity as a substitute for sugar. Because this product is newer there is less research to look at, but what is there should give pause for thought. It is advertised as being made from sugar, but that does not mean it is anything like sugar, just as water in no way resembles the oxygen and hydrogen from which it is made. To make sucralose, three chlorine atoms are substituted for three oxygen-hydrogen groups on the sugar molecule turning it into a chlorocarbon. Chlorocarbons have been known to cause genetic, organ, immune and reproductive damage for some time, and they cause swelling of the liver as well as swelling and calcification of the kidneys. If you get any mid-back pain in the kidney area or bladder irritation after consuming Splenda, take it out of your diet immediately.

Choose healthful sweeteners like raw (unpasteurized) honey, organic maple syrup, Rapadura or Stevia to sweeten your food if necessary

Omega-3 Benefits

What benefits does fish oil offer our bodies? What is fish oil all about and what makes it good for us? You may have heard it on the news, or read it in a magazine, but how good is fish oil for you? These are a few questions I'll try to answer in this short little article.

All around the world, fish oil has received attention regarding its benefits to achieving a healthier lifestyle. Health expert and scientists have done many studies on omega-3 fatty acids (the key nutrient in fish oil). So what's in fish oil that makes it so beneficial to our bodies?

EPA is an omega 3 fatty acid. EPA, otherwise known as eicosapentaenoic acid, is mostly found in fish oil. According to the University of Maryland Health Center, "increased intake of EPA has beneficial effects on coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, and inflammatory disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis. Most people in the Western world do not get enough omega-3 fatty acids in their diet." [1]

Omega fatty acids can be obtained from eating fish like salmon, cod liver, herring, and mackerel, or by taking a supplement. The reason many people turn to omega-3 supplements is because consumption of certain fish can be toxic, especially when consumed in large amounts.

One supplement that I recommend is TriVita's Omega Prime. Omega Prime is created from the highest grade of fish oil, and uses only contaminant-free fish oil that has undergone a 10 stage distilling process. So, if what you've heard about fish contamination, do not fear. You can be assured that Omega Prime is free of all contamination.

TriVita's Omega Prime contains a "premier and unique blend of four different types of the most highly regarded Essential Fatty Acids (EFA) oils – Fish, Flaxseed, Evening Primrose and Perilla Seed."

The importance of omega-3 fatty acids as part of your diet are becoming more prevalent. More and more studies are beginning to surface, and diets, typical of modern America - ones high in omega-6 fatty acids and low in omega-3s - are linked to higher risks of cancer, diabetes, and immunity disorders.

But now you can help protect your body from these horrible diseases, by adding omega-3 fatty acids to your diet. You do not have to be a fish eater, or even enjoy fish to reap the benefits provided by omega-3. But, you should do something to introduce these very important EPAs into your diet.

I hope you've learned something about EPA, EFA, and omega-3. If you would like additional information on Omega Prime and any of the TriVita nutritional products, you can go to TriVita Products. TriVita ensures that you get the safest, freshest, and most effective products available on the market today. Each product is made under the strictest quality controls in the nutritional supplement industry.

Toxins: A Major Source of Inflammation

Our toxic environment

In North America we are inundated with toxins every moment of every day. Pollution in our air, water and food challenges our ability to detoxify and adapt. Worse still, the place we think of as a haven from stress – our home – is likely the most toxic environment we face in our daily routines. Toxins released from household chemicals, fabric, carpet, fragrances and pesticides seep into our body in tiny amounts even as we sleep.

The toxins in our body build up much like a runner trying to run a marathon with lead shoes...it simply weighers you down, affecting your ability to run effectively. Toxic waste in the body slows the efficiency of our mitochondria (the energy-producing engines inside our cells). Noxious chemicals create fatigue, headaches, digestive disturbances and moodiness. Eventually, toxins become the focus for inflammation.

So what is Inflammation?

Your body uses acute inflammation to try to neutralize toxicity. Think of your reaction to a bee sting: redness, swelling, heat and pain. This is not caused by the toxins in the bee venom. It is the reaction of your body as it tries to eliminate the toxicity: Redness is the increase in blood supply to bring in immune system antibodies and remove the neutralized venom. Swelling is the lymphatic fluid that dilutes the concentrated poison while providing proteins for repair of the tissue damaged by the toxins. Heat comes from immune system activity as it battles the invading contaminant. Pain causes us to guard that area from further damage. Chronic inflammation occurs when the toxins are not completely removed from an area.

What can you do to reduce this deadly killer called "Inflammation?"

Begin at the source, your home. Take toxic cleaning products out of your living area, especially if you have young children as they are more at risk. Take a proactive approach to protecting yourself with two superheroes:

Essential fatty acids – Many of the toxins we face are fat-soluble. We need “clean” fats in abundance to displace toxic fats in our brain, liver and other regions of our body.

Antioxidants – Antioxidants neutralize toxins and Betalain antioxidants found in Nopal figs have two added benefits over standard antioxidants:

Betalains drain away the toxin from an affected area Betalains shore up the cell membrane to help promote healing. Betalains turn out to be our best tool in combating the causes of inflammation: toxins, stress, injury and nutrient deficiency. Use this excellent tool liberally to help you resist the increasing onslaught of toxins both inside and outside of our home sweet home!

Health and Wellness

The Health and wellness industry is one of the growth industries which is helping to pull the country out of recession.

The last time a prospect to capitalize on such an opportunity was back during the gold rush. The health and wellness industry is genuine. In fact one of the elite expert economists, Paul Zane Pilzer, has been saying for years that things would go this way and he was right. And as he had foreseen, a renaissance is occurring in the health and wellness home business market.

Over half the people in America are overweight, inflamed and a prime target for assorted illnesses. Here’s the scene–For the past 20 years everybody has been talking about the health and fitness industry but they did little about it and now the numbers have doubled in the wrong direction. How is that likely? You will in all probability be astonished by the answer.

This will not be a biological issue. We didn’t get this from our ancestors. In your parents generation over half the population wasn’t overweight or inflamed. The situation is one of economics. Most of the goods and services which are taken for being healthy are personal expenses, like a nutritionalist, gym membership, organic food, personal exercise classes and most importantly legitimate vitamins, supplements and nutrition.

Now tune in on this–Americans outlay $1 1/2 trillion each year on sickness and illnesses in the misnamed ‘healthcare’ system. It means that we wait till we get sick, gain weight, and become in ill health, and then reach a point of diagnosable problems and after that we look to the health care system. One and a half trillion dollars is genuinely a big problem, yes? {Now listen closely here–wherever there’s big-time problems there’s also big-time opportunities like embracing a health and wellness business.A health and wellness home business is a huge opportunity to deal with. Bear in mind–every cloud has a silver lining and a health and wellness business is authentically a silver lining.

Folks want health not ill health I say avail oneself on what the market wants. So put away those picks and shovels as the health and wellness business industry might be the next “gold rush.” The recent vacuum in our economy and sick care system allows for great opportunity. I advocate a 2 step plan to make the most of the wellness revolution. If you follow these two steps you can be the confident owner of a health and wellness home business and have a great chance of succeeding.

1) Identify a forward-thinking company that combines the highest business principles with the latest scientific methods. Make sure it can predictably make a positive impact on people’s health plus allows for a health and wellness business start up. Do your legwork to see if it really does better people’s lives and don’t rely on fancy websites and folk tales, you want confirmation. When you find aforementioned you can really clean up! Baby boomers are desperate for strategies that will improve and maintain their health, isn’t everyone.

2) You can be a middle person for their product through a home business. This revolution will be driven from the start by the baby boom generation via the wellness network of home business entrepreneurs. By the year 2016, more than ten million people will have become millionaires– many of them using the very same two-step approach outlined here. How bad do you want to be part of that group?

Fighting Inflammation

Sonoran Bloom Nopalea is touted as one of the best inflammation fighters. However, most likely it's the toxins in your body that causes inflammation. Fighting inflammation and getting natural pain relief are plausible attributes; getting to the the root cause is of the utmost importance.

Every week, Brazos Minshew, TriVita's Chief Science Officer, writes a health and wellness newsletter. This week is no different. In the newsletter, Mr. Minshew delves into the causes, triggers, and ways to fight inflammation. The newsletter is posted in its entirety.

Recently, a series of forest fires ravaged the landscape in Southern California. One particular fire burned many fine homes. The firefighters worked through the night to extinguish the fire and they were making progress. However, with the dawn came a change in circumstances: an increase in heat, a reduction in humidity and hot, dry winds from the south brought dry air and a fresh supply of oxygen that intensified the fire. Soon, a firestorm erupted creating flaming tornadoes.

That is the perfect illustration of the inflammation that can occur in the human body. What may begin as a single spark of inflammation may erupt into an inflammatory disease that engulfs our entire body and threatens our life. Efforts to combat the inflammation may be affected by external forces that fan the flames until we are consumed.

Causes of inflammation
There are four common causes of inflammation:

·         Trauma or injury

·         Toxins and poisons

·         Deficiencies of various kinds

·         Emotional distress

Any of these factors may trigger the start of inflammation or increase the intensity of the heat by adding fuel to the fire.

An example of this may be inflammation triggered by toxins and fueled by emotional distress. Gout is a form of inflammation strongly linked to toxicity. For example, gout may be triggered in susceptible people by environmental toxins like carbon tetrachloride or dietary toxins such as HCFS (high fructose corn syrup) found in soft drinks. Gout may also be triggered by depression associated with loss, or by anxiety associated with chronic emotional distress. A new round of gout may be triggered by simple trauma to a previously affected toe or possibly a Vitamin C deficiency.

Adding multiple sources of inflammation together may trigger a firestorm of inflammation that rages out of control - creating serious signs of disease.

Triggers: known and unknown

The firefighters mentioned above lost that particular battle with the forest fire because they could not foresee all of the influences hampering their efforts. The same is true with us:

·         We can not always foresee all of the inflammation triggers we face

·         We can not always tell when we trigger the process of inflammation

While we may remember our last soft drink, we may not know when we last breathed carbon tetrachloride, ate fruits and vegetables deficient in Vitamin C, or created micro-trauma by our sleeping position, sedentary lifestyle or choice of shoes. We may also not readily discern the impact of internalized stress.

I recently encountered three people who had different forms of inflammation. One individual suffered from episodes of gout, the second from chronic colitis and the third from osteoarthritis of the knees. They all experienced fast and profound benefits from Nopalea with its anti-inflammatory Betalains. They also later experienced a flare-up of symptoms when their life changed. In all three cases the inflammation appeared to be triggered by severe emotional upset: loss of a spouse, loss of a sibling and loss of a job.

Trying to quench the fire of inflammation created by these emotional extremes with a minimum serving of Nopalea was like trying to quench a forest fire with a single pail of water! We need to judge the severity of the inflammation and meet it with the appropriate anti-inflammatory response if we are to be successful. Don't be afraid to use 3 ounces or 6 ounces every day for a real "Betalain-Boost"!

Conclusion

When we experience any sign or symptom of distress we should interpret it as a communication from our body to our mind that something is wrong. The frequency, intensity and duration of the inflammation will determine how we should escalate our response.

As detectives we solve the mystery of pain by analyzing the four causes of inflammation. However, we must also realize that our ability to solve these puzzles is limited by our knowledge. The more we know about how we work, the greater the opportunity we have to discern the causes of inflammation, create an appropriate, strategic response and successfully put out the fire. I encourage you to listen to my audio book, "Body Systems 101" for an introduction to this concept. Call 1-800-991-7116 to find out how to get this audio book.

I hope you learned something about inflammation from Mr. Minshew. If not, my I suggest calling the number listed above and getting his audio book. He has been studying the causes of inflammation for some time, and he offers some great insight on the the number one medical issue most people face.
