Weight Loss

Health and Wellness - Weight loss

Many of us have attempted to lose weight at one time or another, and the natural weight loss tendency is to look for a fast and easy way to shed that extra weight. As a result, weight loss is now a multi-billion-dollar industry, encompassing everything from diet books and slimming clubs to weight-loss programs selling specially formulated foods and medications.

Think long-term

Weight loss is difficult and there are no miracle solutions. To lose weight and keep it off takes time and commitment. Many popular programs appear to fulfill their promises in the short-term by restricting certain food groups for example. However, these rarely teach you how to establish and maintain healthy eating habits in the long-term and, once you return to your old eating habits, your lost weight quickly returns. Seeking medical advice

Before beginning any program, especially very low-calorie or quick weight-loss types, talk to your doctor, especially if you are on any medication since the dose may have to be adjusted. Your doctor will monitor your progress and help you determine how much and what type of exercise is appropriate. He or she may also advise you to take vitamin and mineral supplements while you are on the diet program.

In general, weight loss programs should not be undertaken by women who are pregnant or breast-feeding or by anyone under the age of 18. If you are in one of these categories and are concerned about your weight, seek advice from your doctor.

There are many types of diets. Some limit certain macronutrients, such as fat or carbohydrates; others limit types of food, such as starchy carbohydrates. Some promote specific foods, such as grapefruit or cabbage soup, while others attempt to regulate your intake according to a strict formula, such as 40 percent carbohydrate: 30 percent protein: 30 percent fat.

However, other diet programs are based on theories that our bodies do not tolerate certain foods and that these must be eliminated from the diet. Most diets are aimed at helping you lose weight, but others promise a disease-free life to those who follow the program. When evaluating each of these diet plans, consider what it promises.

I firmly believe that there is no single best way for everyone to lose weight; most weight-loss diets work for some people; none works for everyone. However, with a little trial and error, everyone should be able to find a diet program that is effective for them

Vitamin D and Your Pregnancy

We may all know that vitamin d is important for the development of healthy bones, but is there a relationship between vitamin d and a successful pregnancy?

According to a study by the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute in Melbourne Australia, "maternal vitamin D status during pregnancy is important for the health of the mother and offspring across a range of possible health outcomes."[1]

"Evidence from animal studies, with some supportive human evidence, suggests that fertility may be impaired in mothers with low vitamin D. During pregnancy, maintaining vitamin D and calcium levels may decrease the risks of pre-eclampsia, while gestational diabetes mellitus appears to be more common in those with low vitamin D status, although there is insufficient evidence of causality."[1]

Since our early childhood we've been told that vitamin d and calcium build strong bones. However, the research from this study may show that it's just as important while a child is still in the womb. It seems that pregnant mothers, just as much as young children, need their daily requirement of vitamin d and calcium.

That said, it may be just as important for expectant mothers to be on some sort of a daily multi-vitamin program. "Folic acid in combination with a multivitamin supplement has been associated with a decrease in specific birth defects...Women in the reproductive age group should be advised about the benefits of folic acid in addition to a multivitamin supplement during wellness visits (birth control renewal, Pap testing, yearly examination) especially if pregnancy is contemplated."[2]

When it comes to our health, proper diet is of utmost importance. However, with the high-paced society we live in, it's not always easy to eat a healthy meal. That's why we need, not only vitamin d and calcium but, a daily regiment of multi-vitamins. Even though most multi-vitamins contain vitamin d and calcium, they may not contain the appropriate amount, especially if you're a mother-to-be.

"There are ongoing research studies to examine the effect of vitamin D on the developing fetus," Dr. Catherine M. Gordon, director of the Children's Hospital Bone Health Program at Children's Hospital Boston, says. "It is known that many mothers are vitamin D deficient, which explains why we are seeing such high rates of vitamin D deficiency among newborns and young children. It is critically important that a pregnant woman receive at least 400 IU of vitamin D daily (the amount in many prenatal vitamins) and a higher dose if prescribed by their obstetrician."[2]

If you're thinking about having children, or are pregnant, adhering to a strict vitamin d and calcium regiment may be in you, and your unborn child's best interest.

Weight Loss Over 40\'s

Health and Wellness - Weight loss

Many women over 40 do not succeed in losing the weight they’d like to lose. Seriously, how often have you tried to lose weight without a permanent result? When working with women over 40 I observe the same risks preventing permanent, lasting weight loss over and over…

Deficit in Social Contacts, Care and Sexuality
Women often tend to make up emotional needs by eating- making it impossible to lose weight permanently:

  • Extend your circle of friends and socialize more frequently
  • Cultivate existing friendly relationships
  • Respect your personal life; Put more emphasis on your private life and take time for yourself

Not enough sun
Sunlight has many benefits for our physical and emotional well-being making it easier to lose weight permanently:

  • Go outside daily, not enough sunlight creates cravings for sweets
  • Avoid wearing sunglasses on a cloudy or dreary day
  • During winter months, go to a tanning salon from time to time or get a lamp that produces light similar to daylight

Too much alcohol
Alcohol is high in calories and stimulates hunger:

  • Avoid alcohol when you are feeling blue or are depressed.
  • Drink only on occasion and in social situations, and never drink when you are alone
  • Avoid drinks high in alcohol content

Hormones and Medicament-Induced Side Effects
For a woman over 40 the delicate hormone balance changes- permanent weight loss is harder to achieve:

  • If you go through sudden weight gain, consult a physician
  • Some drugs cause weight gain – talk to your doctor
  • Never end taking a drug without the advice of your physician

Mistakes with Nutrition
Over 40 the body stores fat much easier.
By paying close care to your nutrition, permanent weight loss is possible:

  • Eat a lot of fresh fruit, veggies and whole wheat products
  • Read labels and think of hidden fats in foods such as processed foods, cheese, sausage and pastries
  • Prepare your foods using a healthy method such as steaming, roasting or stewing, and avoid frying. Leave off breaded foods and dressings high in fat.
  • “Avoid many of the “”white”" foods that hold empty carbohydrates such as sugar, flour, bread, cake and rice
  • Control labels before purchasing a product to see how many calories it contains
  • Avoid processed foods
  • Artificial sweeteners might stimulate your appetite, so try not to use them

Weight Loss

Health and Wellness - Trouble Losing Weight

Many people ask why has my weight Loss Slowed? Sooner or latter in every weight loss plan this happens, usually after about 15 lb. weight loss the body just shuts down. It can happen at 5 lb. or even at 30 lbs. Here are some of the ideas to look at if this happens to you:
Don’t Let “Normal” Set Points and Weight Loss Plateaus Stop Your Plan. You have watched you diet for weeks, exercised and saw a steady weight loss. Then suddenly it all ends, no matter what you the scales will not budge. You have reached a set point, or plateau. Why is this inevitable?

* Our body works hard to keep energy intake and output in balance.
* We all like weight loss but our body interprets the weight loss as starvation,
* It shuts down our metabolism.
* The more effort you make to burn more calories the more it slows down.

It takes fewer calories to maintain your weight because you simply weigh less. To lose one pound a week, you’ll need to create a deficit of approximately 500 calories per day. This plateauing effect is one of the biggest motivation killers there is. The best single word of advice is to make a change. In Part 1 of this series you will learn all of the reasons responsible for this problem.
Here are some of the causes range of the slow down include:
# Normal physiologic resistance to weight loss
# Genetic predisposition
# Unrealistic expectations
# Mistakes in food selection, portions, and preparations
# Bored or fatigued What Should You Weigh? Expectations Versus Reality:
Are expectations unrealistic? If you are comparing yourself to the bone-thin celebrity on television or what you weighed in high school, perhaps your expectations are unrealistic.

Genetic Predisposition Cause Weight Ranges for Many People:
70% of the variation in people’s weight may be accounted for by inheritance, which means that a tendency toward a certain weight is more strongly inherited than nearly any other tendency.

Weight Loss is Proportional to Starting Weight:
For an individual who weighs 200 pounds, it will be easier to lose five pounds than for the person weighing 150 pounds. This is normal and expected.

It’s Normal for Weight Loss to Slow Down
Weight loss slows over time because your metabolism slows to prevent what the body interprets as starvation. Although the possibility of starvation is not entirely relevant in the U.S. today, this bodily mechanism did help our ancestors survive during lean times.

Personal Set point:
Each person has his or her own set point, or the level at which one naturally starts to resist weight change and becomes “comfortable” with his or her new weight. There are low set points and high set points; think of them as preset weight zones. Your plateau might be your low set point. Many times the cause of this may be those genes you inherited, other times just from making a few mistakes. Set points often occur at weight points of previous diet attempts.

Depletion of Vitamins and Minerals:
Weight loss is associated not only with reductions in body fat, but also some loss of muscle mass. Invariably numerous vitamins and chemicals as vitamins and co-enzymes needed to breakdown fat are also depleted.

Once you have discovered the reasons for you weight loss slow down, the next step is to do something about it.

Sources of Vitamin B12

New DocumentSources of Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is naturally found in animal products, including fish, meat, poultry, eggs, milk, and milk products. Vitamin B12 is generally not present in plant foods, but fortified breakfast cereals are a readily available source of vitamin B12 with high bioavailability for vegetarians. Some nutritional yeast products also contain vitamin B12. Fortified foods vary in formulation, so it is important to read product labels to determine which added nutrients they contain.

Dietary supplements

In dietary supplements, vitamin B12 is usually present as cyanocobalamin, a form that the body readily converts to the active forms methylcobalamin and 5-deoxyadenosylcobalamin. Dietary supplements can also contain methylcobalamin and other forms of vitamin B12.

Existing evidence does not suggest any differences among forms with respect to absorption or bioavailability. However the body’s ability to absorb vitamin B12 from dietary supplements is largely limited by the capacity of intrinsic factor. For example, only about 10 mcg of a 500 mcg oral supplement is actually absorbed in healthy people.

Vitamin B12 Deficiency

New DocumentVitamin B12 Deficiency

Vitamin B12 is an essential water-soluble vitamin that is commonly found in a variety of foods such as fish, shellfish, meat, and dairy products. Vitamin B12 is frequently used in combination with other B vitamins in a vitamin B complex formulation. It helps maintain healthy nerve cells and red blood cells and is also needed to make DNA, the genetic material in all cells. Vitamin B12 is bound to the protein in food. Hydrochloric acid in the stomach releases B12 from protein during digestion. Once released, B12 combines with a substance called intrinsic factor (IF) before it is absorbed into the bloodstream.

The human body stores several years' worth of vitamin B12, so nutritional deficiency of this vitamin is extremely rare. Elderly are the most at risk. However, vitamin B12 deficiency can result from being unable to use vitamin B12. Inability to absorb vitamin B12 from the intestinal tract can be caused by a disease known as pernicious anemia. Additionally, strict vegetarians or vegans who are not taking in proper amounts of B12 are also prone to a deficiency state.

Megaloblastic anemia - due to vitamin B12 deficiency

Vitamin B12 deficiency is a cause of megaloblastic anemia. In this type of anemia, red blood cells are larger than normal and the ratio of nucleus size to cell cytoplasm is increased. There are other potential causes of megaloblastic anemia, including folate deficiency or various inborn metabolic disorders. If the cause is vitamin B12 deficiency, then treatment with B12 is the standard approach. Patients with anemia should be evaluated by a physician in order to diagnose and address the underlying cause.

A day's supply of vitamin B12 can be obtained by eating 1 chicken breast plus 1 hard-boiled egg plus 1 cup plain low-fat yogurt, or 1 cup milk plus 1 cup raisin bran.
